Science in Society at AS and A2
Science in Society for AS and A2 will be available for teaching from September 2008. AQA is the Awarding Body and the publisher is Heinemann. These two currently provide assessment and course materials for the AS Science for Public Understanding course.
Aims
This new A-level course aims to help students develop the knowledge and skills needed:
to understand how science and scientists work
to analyse contemporary issues involving science and technology
to communicate their scientific appreciation and understanding to others.
Students
This course will:
broaden the curriculum for those whose interests lie mainly in the arts or humanities
enable those studying science to reflect on their specialist studies in a wider context.
About the course
The AS Science in Society course is an updated version of the Science for Public Understanding AS course which is examined by AQA. The coursework is unchanged, the content broadly similar but updated.
For the new A2 course, fewer issues are covered in greater depth to enable a rigorous treatment of How Science Works ideas. More problem-based learning is also used throughout the course.
